Activities

Within the grounds there is a heated floodlit swimming pool, walking, nature study, deer, a useful area for soccer, badminton or volley ball, and table tennis.   (The pool is 13.5 by 5.0 metres)

The following are some ideas in the region many will be familiar with:

Restaurants – the nearest hotel-restaurants are at Quatre Routes a mile away. Turn left from the villa, right at the main road and drive to the first junction. Both are highly recommended. Others in nearby Neuville provide local cuisine and good value.

Canoeing, kayaking, white-water rafting or boat tripsthese are popular in the dramatic scenery of the gorges upstream from Argentat or along the quieter waters en route to Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne.

Caves – the caves at Padirac include a boat trip for some distance underground and they are possibly the most famous amongst many in the region. They lie south of Beaulieu and to the west en-route to Rocamadour. Some, including those at Grottes de Lascaux (near Montignac north of Sarlat) have ancient cave drawings of animals.   The region is full of caves with public access at every turn.

Chateaux – there are many throughout the region. The most dramatic one within reach of the villa familiar to me is perched high on a rock above the Dordogne on the south bank on a dramatic bend some miles east of Beaulieu.   There is a similar one at Castelnaud La Chapelle a few miles distant from Beynac on the opposite side of the river.   Take a drive around and you will be surprised how many you will see.

Golf - There is a full eighteen hole golf course within approximately nine miles from the villa.

Fishing - ample fresh water fishing opportunities abound in the rivers and the lakes.

.

Tennis, sailing, boating at La Fontaine - this is at an adventure playground a short distance from the house and was the brainchild of the previous owner of the villa.   It also has its own restaurant and you will see the signs to the venture on the road between Quatre Routes and Beynat.   Tennis courts can be found in a number of nearby towns.

Horse Riding - available by arrangement.

Water skiing and windsurfing - available on one of the many lakes dotted throughout the area.

Shopping - for serious shopping visit Brive-La-Gaillarde or Tulle to the north and west within easy reach.    For the nearest shops try Albussac or Beynat (a few minutes drive but closed on Mondays).     For good shopping in the best scenery nearby try Argentat or Beaulieu-Sur-Dordogne where there is a lovely restaurant up a side street run by a couple who speak perfect English.

Pubs – There are countless cafe-bars throughout the country but pubs as we know them are harder to come by.    The local at Tudeils was one of my favourites before it closed for refurbishment, and I am not sure if it operates merely as a restaurant/bar now since I have not been along there since.   However it is worth a try since it is quite close on the Beaulieu road.    There are also more traditional pubs at places like Tulle and Sarlat which are further afield.   There is a quaint little cafe ideal for taking a coffee tucked away at the rear of the square in Albussac near the Post Office should you go along to the shops there during your stay.
